A person's first visit to a courthouse can be overwhelming. They may not know which floor to go to, where to check in, which courtroom their case is in, where to find the clerk's office, or even where the restrooms are. For remote hearings, they may struggle with login procedures, virtual waiting rooms, or audio/video setup.
Wayfinding support means physically or virtually orienting a person so they can get to where they need to be and know what to expect when they arrive. This includes showing someone through a courthouse, explaining check-in procedures, pointing out the self-help center and clerk's office, and telling them where to sit and what will happen when their case is called. For remote settings, it includes helping with technology setup and platform navigation.
This task was identified as a gap in the taxonomy during a preliminary inter-rater coding exercise: one coder found no matching task for a vignette describing physical courthouse navigation, despite this activity being well-documented in the court navigator literature. It is a real, time-consuming task performed by court navigators, self-help center staff, and volunteer programs.

How to choose
Quality Standards
What good performance looks like. Use these criteria to evaluate systems.
- Person can find their destination without additional help after initial guidance
- Instructions account for accessibility needs (elevators, hearing loops, language)
- Timing guidance is realistic (how early to arrive, how long security takes)
- Remote-hearing instructions are tested on the platforms actually used by the court
- Staff or signage is available at decision points (elevators, floor landings, department doors)
