Service of Documents

Serve court documents and other papers upon the correct party following all local rules, and getting the correct proof that it has been carried out.

Task Description

When a case starts or moves forward—filing a complaint, asking for a hearing, seeking a protection order—the next critical step is formal service. If service is done wrong, the court may not hear the case, deadlines can slip, or orders can be set aside. Rules vary by jurisdiction, case type, and stage, and people often don’t know who may serve, which method is allowed, or how to complete the proof of service.
Success means the user or legal team completes valid service on time, files the right proof, understands why the chosen method is acceptable, and knows exactly what to do next if service fails—reducing rejected filings, continuances, and safety risks.
