An AI-powered chatbot that helps community members identify legal issues, find appropriate referrals, and access self-help resources in plain language.

Project Description

Navi is Lone Star Legal Aid’s upcoming client-facing AI chatbot, designed to guide community members through recognizing and addressing their problems. Built using OpenAI and Azure technologies, Navi uses branching logic to walk users through legal problem scenarios and help them determine whether their concern is legal in nature.

When a legal issue is identified, Navi connects users with relevant legal aid services, plain-language explanations, and trusted resources. For non-legal matters, it provides self-help materials and referrals to community-based assistance. To improve clarity and accessibility, LSLA’s subject matter experts are drafting plain-language explanations for all mapped LSC legal problem codes, covering the entire legal issue life cycle.

While development is still in the early phases, LSLA has already begun community outreach and awareness efforts. Navi is part of LSLA’s broader strategy to reduce barriers to legal help, increase efficiency, and expand the organization’s impact by enabling more people to access timely guidance in less time.
